SHARKY 774 compact is a compact ultrasonic heat meter from the German manufacturer Diehl Metering. It is designed for billing measurement of thermal energy consumption in both heating and cooling systems. This version has a nominal flow rate qp of 0.6 m³/h, nominal diameter DN15 (G¾B), and an M-Bus communication interface for remote data reading.
The meter is intended for billing heat metering in apartment buildings, flat interface units, heating circuits with heat pumps, and cooling systems. Thanks to its height of just 54 mm above the pipe centreline, it also fits into compact interface units and narrow installation shafts where a mechanical meter may not have sufficient space.
The qp 0.6 m³/h version is particularly suitable for flats with lower heat loss and smaller heating circuit dimensions. The low starting flow rate of 1 l/h ensures that the meter captures even very small consumptions typical of low-energy and passive buildings. It is ideal for property managers, MEP designers, and plumbing companies that need a certified meter for allocating heating costs among end users.

The meter evaluates flow using the ultrasonic transit-time method. There are no moving parts inside the pipe, which eliminates mechanical wear and allows the meter to maintain its accuracy throughout its service life. The low starting flow value (1 l/h for qp 0.6 m³/h) ensures that the meter captures even small consumptions typical of flats with energy-saving control systems.
Ultrasonic technology is insensitive to suspended particles in the heating water, enabling the device to perform reliably even in systems where mechanical meters tend to become clogged.
The meter is equipped with an M-Bus interface in accordance with EN 13757-3. Data is transmitted over two non-polarised wires, the interface is galvanically isolated, and it supports automatic baud rate detection at 300 and 2,400 baud. The configurable telegram allows reading of current energy, power, volume, flow rate, temperatures, and historical data.
Current consumption is recalculated every 2 seconds, while temperatures are updated every 16 seconds, so the user always sees the current system status in the central system.

An ultrasonic meter has no moving parts, so it does not suffer mechanical wear in operation and maintains its accuracy throughout its service life. It achieves lower pressure losses, offers a wider dynamic range (qp/qi up to 1:100), and can detect very low flow rates from 1 l/h. At the same time, it is insensitive to dirt and suspended particles in the heating water, to which mechanical meters are prone.
The qp 0.6 m³/h version is sized for lower flow rates, typically for flats with lower heat loss, low-energy and passive buildings, or circuits with a heat pump. The maximum flow rate qs is 1.2 m³/h, and continuous operation above this value is not permitted. If the design flow rate exceeds 1 m³/h or approaches this limit, choose the qp 1.5 m³/h version. If the meter is undersized, it operates at the overload limit and its service life is reduced; if oversized, it may lack resolution in the lower part of the flow curve.
M-Bus (Meter-Bus) is a standardised bus system for remote meter reading in accordance with EN 13757-3. The meter is connected via a two-wire non-polarised line to an M-Bus master (converter or concentrator), which collects the data and passes it to a higher-level system. Communication is galvanically isolated and supports automatic speed detection at 300 and 2,400 baud. In addition to M-Bus, a ZVEI optical interface is also available for local service reading.
The meter can be installed in any position – horizontally, vertically on a riser or downpipe, or even inverted above the pipe centreline. This orientation independence is due to the ultrasonic measuring principle, which does not require straight inlet and outlet lengths to the same extent as mechanical water meters.
For the M-Bus version, the battery lasts up to 12 years under standard operating conditions. Higher ambient temperatures reduce battery life, which is why operation below 35 °C is recommended. The battery cannot be replaced by the user during operation; replacement is carried out by the manufacturer's service laboratory.
Yes. The SHARKY 774 compact is approved under the MID directive (DE-13-MI004-PTB008) in accuracy class 2 and for cooling in accordance with PTB K7.2. It therefore meets the requirements for a legally controlled meter used for billing of heating and cooling. The meter belongs to environmental class E2 (electromagnetic immunity) and M2 (mechanical immunity), making it less susceptible to interference from PWM circulation pumps and similar sources.
