SHARKY 774 compact is a compact ultrasonic heat meter from the German manufacturer Diehl Metering. It is designed for billing measurement of thermal energy consumption in both heating and cooling systems. This version has a nominal flow rate of qp 1.5 m³/h, nominal diameter DN15 (G¾B), and a wireless wM-Bus (Wireless M-Bus) communication interface for radio data readout without the need to run bus cables.
The meter is intended for billing measurement of heat in apartment buildings, flat interface units, heating circuits with heat pumps, and cooling systems. Thanks to its height of only 54 mm above the pipe centreline, it also fits into compact interface stations and narrow installation shafts where a mechanical meter may not have sufficient space.
Wireless wM-Bus communication makes retrofitting in existing apartment buildings much easier, where it is not practical to install bus cabling to every meter afterwards. The qp 1.5 m³/h version is the most common size for standard apartment heating circuits. It is suitable for property managers, building services designers, and plumbing contractors who need a certified meter for allocating heating costs among end users.

The meter evaluates flow using the ultrasonic transit-time measurement method. There are no moving parts inside the pipe, which eliminates mechanical wear and allows the meter to maintain its accuracy throughout its service life. The low starting flow rate (2.5 l/h for qp 1.5 m³/h) ensures that the meter also captures very small consumptions.
Ultrasonic measurement is insensitive to suspended particles in the heating water, which means the device performs well even in systems where mechanical meters tend to become clogged.
The meter is equipped with a wireless wM-Bus (Wireless M-Bus) interface in accordance with the Open Metering Standard (OMS), generation 3 profile A or generation 4 profile B. It transmits in the licence-free 868 MHz band, and communication is one-way – the meter sends a radio telegram with current values at regular intervals, which is received by an M-Bus receiver, concentrator, or mobile device.
Two readout modes are available. Standard mode (walk-by) sends data every 64 s and a synchronisation telegram every 900 s – it is suitable for walk-by readout by an operator using a handheld receiver. Rapid mode (drive-by) sends every 14 s and is intended for readout from a passing vehicle. The data telegram contains energy, power, volume, flow rate, temperatures, and historical data. A ZVEI optical interface is also available for local service readout.
Technical parameters:
An ultrasonic meter has no moving parts, so it does not suffer mechanical wear in operation and maintains its accuracy throughout its service life. It achieves lower pressure losses, has a wider dynamic range (qp/qi up to 1:100), and can detect very low flow rates from 2.5 l/h. At the same time, it is insensitive to dirt and suspended particles in the heating water, to which mechanical meters are prone.
The qp 1.5 m³/h version is the standard size for typical apartment heating circuits – suitable for most flats in standard residential buildings. The maximum flow rate qs is 3 m³/h. The qp 0.6 m³/h version is intended for flats with low heat loss, low-energy buildings, and passive houses. The qp 2.5 m³/h version is then suitable for flats with higher heat loss, shared DHW heating circuits, or smaller commercial premises. If the meter is undersized, it operates at the limit of overload and its service life is reduced; if oversized, on the other hand, resolution may be insufficient in the lower part of the flow curve.
wM-Bus (Wireless M-Bus) is the wireless version of the M-Bus standard for remote meter reading. The meter transmits a radio telegram at regular intervals, which is received by an M-Bus receiver, concentrator, or mobile device (notebook, tablet with reading application). Communication takes place in the licence-free 868 MHz band according to the Open Metering Standard (OMS) and is one-way – the meter only transmits, it does not receive. The main advantage over wired M-Bus is that you do not need to run bus cable to every meter, which is particularly suitable in existing apartment buildings.
Standard mode (walk-by) sends data every 64 seconds and is optimised for walk-by reading by an operator with a handheld receiver, who only needs to pass by the flat door or shaft. In this mode, the battery lasts up to 11 years. Rapid mode (drive-by) sends every 14 seconds and is intended for reading from a passing vehicle, where the time available to capture the telegram is shorter. The higher transmission frequency reduces battery life to approximately 7 years. The mode is set during commissioning according to the planned method of readout.
The meter can be installed in any position – horizontally, vertically on a riser or downpipe, or even inverted above the pipe centreline. This orientation independence is due to the ultrasonic measurement principle, which does not require straight pipe lengths upstream and downstream of the meter to the same extent as mechanical water meters.
For the wM-Bus version, battery life is up to 11 years in standard mode (walk-by, 64 s interval) and up to 7 years in rapid mode (drive-by, 14 s interval) under standard operating conditions. Higher ambient temperatures reduce battery life – this is why operation below 35 °C is recommended. The battery cannot be replaced by the user during operation; replacement is carried out by the manufacturer's service laboratory.
Yes. SHARKY 774 compact is approved in accordance with the MID directive (DE-13-MI004-PTB008) in accuracy class 2 and for cooling in accordance with PTB K7.2. It therefore meets the requirements for a legally controlled meter used for billing of heat and cooling. The meter belongs to environmental class E2 (electromagnetic immunity) and M2 (mechanical immunity), making it less susceptible to interference from PWM circulation pumps and similar sources.
