E2639-EtO is a detector designed for monitoring high concentrations of ethylene oxide in air. The device is equipped with a temperature-compensated sensor that ensures reliable detection and stable measurement, and it is housed in a wall-mounted enclosure with IP65 protection. The E2639 features three SPDT relays with a maximum load of 250 VAC 5 A. Two relays are used for so-called two-stage detection. The third relay indicates a sensor fault. Communication with higher-level systems is provided by an RS485 Modbus RTU digital interface, complemented by two 4–20 mA analogue outputs. In addition, the device includes four LEDs and an audible alarm, which immediately alert operators to any exceeded limit directly at the installation site – without the need to monitor a remote control system.

Typical applications

The E2639-EtO detector is intended for monitoring ethylene oxide in environments such as sterilisation facilities, hospitals, pharmaceutical plants, chemical stores, and other enclosed spaces where C₂H₄O may accumulate. The device helps prevent health risks associated with exposure to this gas and contributes to ensuring the safety of both personnel and operations.

Ethylene oxide - Wikipedia

Ethylene oxide (C₂H₄O)

Ethylene oxide is a colourless gas with a sweet ether-like odour, which is highly flammable and explosive at room temperature. It is produced primarily by the industrial synthesis of ethylene with oxygen and is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of ethylene glycol, plastics, and detergents, as well as a sterilising agent in healthcare. Even short-term exposure to ethylene oxide can cause irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, headaches, or nausea, while long-term exposure is associated with an increased risk of cancer and damage to the nervous system.

Smart communication – ideal for fire alarm systems

The E2639 detector combines the advantages of an autonomous safety element and an intelligent communication node. It is designed for seamless integration with fire alarm systems (EPS) and offers a wide range of outputs for comprehensive control:

  • Autonomy: 3× volt-free SPDT relays for direct control of equipment or safe system shutdown.
  • Connectivity: Dual RS485 Modbus RTU interface for real-time digital export of measured data to a higher-level system (BMS).
  • Control: 2× 4–20 mA analogue outputs intended for precise control of the ventilation variable frequency drive.

Easy installation

The E2639 is equipped with three M20 cable glands and a dual terminal block for Modbus RTU. The duplicated Modbus RTU terminals simplify and speed up bus wiring for data readout to the higher-level system. No more inserting two conductors into a single terminal. Thanks to the M20 cable glands, all required outputs can be connected conveniently.

Factory settings:

  • Measuring range: 0...100 ppm
  • ALARM1 (RE1): 25 ppm
  • ALARM2 (RE2): 50 ppm
  • ALARM3 (RE3): sensor fault
    • Automatic alarm reset after ventilation
  • Analogue outputs: 4-20mA = 0...100 ppm
  • Modbus RTU address: Baud rate 9600, Parity None, Stop bits 1, Slave ID 1
