Evikon E2639-SF6 is a detector designed for monitoring high concentrations of sulphur hexafluoride in the air. The device is equipped with a temperature-compensated sensor that ensures reliable detection and stable measurement, and it is housed in a wall-mounted enclosure with IP65 protection. The E2639 features three SPDT relays with a maximum load of 250 VAC 5 A. Two relays are used for so-called two-stage detection. The third relay indicates a sensor fault. Communication with higher-level systems is provided via the RS485 Modbus RTU digital interface, complemented by two 4–20 mA analogue outputs. In addition, the device includes four LEDs and an audible alarm to immediately alert operators to an exceeded set limit directly at the installation site – without the need to monitor a remote control system.

Typical applications

The E2639-SF6 detector is intended for monitoring sulphur hexafluoride in environments such as high-voltage switchgear, power plants, substations, laboratories, and other technical workplaces where SF6 is used as an insulating or arc-quenching medium in electrical equipment.

Sulfur hexafluoride - Wikipedia

Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)

Sulphur hexafluoride is colourless and odourless, which makes it particularly dangerous because its presence cannot be detected without a detector. It is released through leaks from electrical equipment such as high-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, or transformers, where it is used as an insulating and arc-quenching medium. Even low concentrations of sulphur hexafluoride can cause health problems such as breathing difficulties, dizziness, or respiratory irritation, while higher levels may lead to suffocation due to oxygen displacement, as SF6 is approximately five times heavier than air and accumulates near the floor.

Smart communication – ideal for fire alarm systems

The E2639 detector combines the advantages of an autonomous safety device and an intelligent communication node. It is designed for seamless integration with fire alarm systems (EPS) and offers a wide range of outputs for comprehensive control:

  • Autonomy: 3× volt-free SPDT relays for direct control of equipment or safe system shutdown.
  • Connectivity: Dual RS485 Modbus RTU interface for real-time digital export of measured data to a higher-level system (BMS).
  • Control: 2× 4–20 mA analogue outputs intended for precise control of the ventilation frequency inverter.

Easy installation

The E2639 is equipped with three M20 cable glands and a dual terminal block for Modbus RTU. The duplicated Modbus RTU terminals help simplify and speed up bus wiring for reading into a higher-level system. No more inserting two conductors into a single terminal. Thanks to the M20 glands, all required outputs can be connected conveniently.

Factory settings:

  • Measuring range: 0...2000 ppm
  • ALARM1 (RE1): 500 ppm
  • ALARM2 (RE2): 1000 ppm
  • ALARM3 (RE3): sensor fault
    • Automatic alarm reset after ventilation
  • Analogue outputs: 4-20mA = 0...2000 ppm
  • Modbus RTU address: Baud rate 9600, Parity None, Stop bits 1, Slave ID 1

Key features

  • Sensor type: Dual-beam infrared (NDIR) sensor
  • Measuring range: 0...2000 ppm
  • Resolution: 1 ppm
  • T90 response time: approx. 30 s
  • Recommended recalibration interval: 12 months
  • Estimated sensor lifetime: > 5 years
  • 1-year warranty on the sensor itself (2 years on the complete device excluding the sensor)

Calibration certificate

Each detector package includes the original manufacturer’s calibration certificate in English, confirming the accuracy and correctness of measurement at the time it leaves the factory.
