TORK T-Y 406 DN 32 solenoid valve (type designation S4010.06) is a solenoid shut-off valve for heating oil and other non-aggressive liquids with a 1 1/4" female thread. In the de-energised state, the valve is closed; it opens when 230 VAC is applied to the coil. It belongs to the indirectly operated (servo-assisted) valve category – to open, it requires a minimum pressure differential of 0.5 bar between the inlet and outlet.

Where the valve is used

The valve is designed for industrial and heating systems using non-aggressive liquids and steam. It can easily handle heating oil, hydraulic oil, light heating oil (type 2E), superheated water and steam up to 160 °C. The maximum medium viscosity is 5 °E (~37 cSt). It is typically installed in heating oil boiler rooms, fuel distribution lines, hydraulic circuits and steam systems where remote control or automatic shut-off of the liquid supply is required. The valve is not intended for aggressive media (acids, gases, concentrated chemicals) – neither the brass body nor the Viton seal would withstand them.

TORK T-Y 406 DN 32 solenoid valve in operation
Operating principle: de-energised closed (NC)

De-energised closed – safe fail-safe position

The valve operates in NC mode (normally closed, de-energised closed): as soon as the coil is not energised, the internal spring keeps the valve closed. To open it, 230 VAC must be applied. In the event of a power failure or emergency shutdown, the liquid supply is automatically shut off, which is important for the safety of oil and steam distribution systems.

TORK T-Y 406 is an indirectly operated (servo-assisted) 2/2-way valve, so for reliable opening it requires a minimum pressure differential of 0.5 bar between the inlet and outlet. Response time is 400 ms when opening and 1000 ms when closing. The operating pressure range is 0.5–12 bar.

Brass body, stainless steel internal parts

The valve body and bonnet are made of forged brass MS 58 (DIN 17673), while the key internal parts are stainless steel – AISI 430 plunger, AISI 304 guide tube and AISI 302 springs. The Viton seal can withstand temperatures from -10 to +160 °C and is resistant to oils and superheated water.

The coil has insulation class H (180 °C), 100% duty cycle and IP65 protection (IP68 on request). The connector complies with ISO 4400 / EN 175301-803 (Form A, cable Ø 6–8 mm) and can be supplied on request with an LED indicator for visual status monitoring.

Warning: due to operation, medium temperature and coil power supply, the surface of the coil may become very hot – use hand protection when handling during operation.

What to watch out for during installation

The valve body can be installed in any position, but the coil must be in a vertical position (axis upwards) – never below the valve axis. Install the valve in the flow direction indicated by the arrow on the underside of the body.

Fit a mechanical strainer upstream of the valve – the seat is sensitive to contamination in the medium and coarse particles may damage it. When filling the system for the first time, open the flow gradually to prevent momentary leakage at the outlet. The coil can be rotated even after wiring, so it can be positioned according to the available space.

Frequently asked questions

The valve is intended for non-aggressive liquids – heating oil, hydraulic oil, light heating oil (type 2E), superheated water and steam. The maximum medium viscosity is 5 °E (~37 cSt). Do not use it for aggressive media (acids, gases, concentrated chemicals), as the brass body and Viton seal are not designed for them.

The NC (normally closed) function means that the valve is closed at rest. It only opens when 230 VAC is applied to the coil. In the event of a power failure or interruption of the power supply, the valve immediately closes automatically, protecting the system against uncontrolled flow and providing essential safety for oil and steam distribution systems.

TORK T-Y 406 is an indirectly operated (servo-assisted) valve – to open, it requires the inlet pressure to be at least 0.5 bar higher than the outlet pressure. Without this pressure differential, the valve will not open. This is not an issue in pressurised systems, but it should be taken into account when designing unpressurised or gravity-fed systems – in such cases, a directly operated valve is required.

The valve body can be installed in any position – this does not affect operation. However, the coil must be in a vertical position with the axis pointing upwards, never below the valve axis. The valve must be installed in the flow direction indicated by the arrow on the underside of the body, and we recommend fitting a mechanical strainer upstream of the valve.

Coil heating is a normal part of operation – heat is generated as current passes through the coil. Combined with the ambient temperature and the medium temperature, the coil surface can become very hot (with 230 VAC, even above 100 °C). This is not a fault, but be aware of the risk of burns – use hand protection when handling the valve during operation.
